You Must Choose Winters to Install a Retaining Wall and Here’s Why

January 21, 2022 by PMS Brick Pavers – We’re the Guys

The popular opinion is that retaining walls must be installed during the winter season. If yes, why? In this article, we answer this key question.

Retaining walls serve many purposes, and these purposes become amplified during the winter season. They not only prevent soil erosion but also do the important job of dividing a yard. Further, when decorated well, a retaining wall also serves as a beautifying feature. Here’s a detailed look at why the winter season is the ideal season for installing retaining walls.

It Will Negate the Damaging Effect of Snow

The snow-covered yard most certainly pleases the heart during the winter season. However, the snow brings with it certain disadvantages. Through the winter season, the snow brings with itself beauty and charm, but as soon as the spring season arrives, the snow starts melting. When this happens, the melted snow erodes the ground, leaving it wet and uneven. This not only makes the yard look dirty, but it also reduces the life of your plants and trees.

One of the easiest ways to negate the damaging effect of snow is to install a retaining wall during the winter season. Choosing the winter season will give the wall ample time to integrate itself with the yard and hold it in place when the snow starts melting during the spring season.

You Will Be Able to Hire the Best Professionals to Do the Job

You must get a retaining wall during the winter season because you will be able to get and hire the best landscapers in town during the winter season. Summer, autumn, and spring are the seasons when most people take up landscaping projects, and therefore, these seasons are quite hectic for the landscapers. Winter, on the other hand, is relatively free for landscaping professionals. Therefore, you will be able to hire the best in the field during this season.

That apart, since landscaping professionals are relatively free during the winter season, they will be able to begin work on your project immediately and finish it as soon as possible. Further, they will also be willing to give you offers and discounts. All in all, choosing the winter season will not only allow you to get the job done from the very best but also at the very best prices.

You Will Have Summers Free to Undertake Other Landscaping Projects

The winter season is also the ideal time for installing a retaining wall because it gives ample time to the retaining wall to integrate with the yard and develop a rock-solid foundation by the summer season when most homeowners undertake landscaping work. Further, when you get done with the retaining wall installation process during the winter season, you don’t have to worry about finding the right landscaper and assigning a part of your summer landscaping budget to the retaining wall installation project or finding the right materials for the project. In simple words, when you install a retaining wall during the winter season, you have enough free time to devote to other things, such as decorating the retaining wall, creating a flower bed next to it, etc.

Summing Up

Now that you know that the winter season is the ideal time to install a retaining wall, what are you waiting for? Find the best landscaper in your area and get done with this important and essential task.

Planning to Get an Outdoor Fireplace? Here’s What You Need to Know

January 15, 2022 by PMS Brick Pavers – We’re the Guys

Outdoor fireplaces have been popular with homeowners in Bloomfield, MI, for many decades now. However, of late, certain variance has been noted in the designs of these beautiful accessories. These days, outdoor fireplace bowls have gathered huge popularity. An outdoor fireplace bowl not only amplifies the overall look and feel of a home but also serves as the perfect accessory around which friends and family members can gather on chilly winter evenings and create and share fond memories.

Though bowl fireplaces have gained immense popularity, these are not the only fireplaces currently available in the Bloomfield, MI, market. One can find fireplaces in many different designs and patterns. So, how does one find the right fireplace for them? Keeping these factors in mind will certainly help.

Decide Why Do You Want a Fireplace

If you are planning to get an outdoor fireplace, the first thing you must do is figure out why do you want to get a fireplace. This will help you find the right fireplace for you. If you are getting a fireplace because you plan to put your Bloomfield, MI, house on the market, then you must get the most magnificent and beautiful fireplace available. If you plan to get a fireplace to entertain your guests, you can consider installing a small fireplace in a small area or buying a portable one.

Next, choose a fireplace that compliments the size of your home. If your outdoor area is too big, a small outdoor fireplace will prove to be useless. Similarly, if you often entertain large gatherings, you will have to invest in a big fireplace, most likely a double-sided one. However, keep in mind that double-sided fireplaces work only in big areas. So, buy one only if your home can accommodate one.

If you are a new parent, you must buy a fireplace that is child-friendly. Look for features, such as an automatic power-off feature in case of an accidental knock or the very handy cool-to-the-touch surface feature.

Decide Between Wood-Burning and Gas-Burning Fireplaces

When it comes to fireplaces, there are two popular options: wood-burning fireplaces and gas-burning fireplaces. While wood-burning fireplaces bring with themselves a certain kind of charm and are ideal for large gatherings, gas-burning fireplaces are far safer than wood-burning fireplaces. Further, gas fireplaces do not require a permit and therefore, it’s far easier to get them installed.

Lastly, make sure your fireplace matches the vibe of your home. If you are someone who loves the traditional vibe and have done your house in the same fashion, a wood-burning fireplace will look better in your home. However, if you are someone who loves contemporary interiors, a gas-burning fireplace would be a better choice for you.

Summing Up

If you are planning to get a fireplace, we suggest taking the help of an expert in your area. Though an expert will charge you a small fee, they will most certainly help you reach the right decision. Further, since experts are well-connected, they will be able to help you find the right fireplace within the right budget.

Here’s Why You Must Find More Ways to Incorporate Brick Pavers in Your Home

January 3, 2022 by PMS Brick Pavers – We’re the Guys

Paver walkways can elevate any landscape — they not only give a space a professionally curated look but also add value to a home. Yes, you heard that right — these days, paver walkways are more than just a landscaping addition to a home. Most homeowners, these days, use them to create a walkway that the guests can use to arrive at the main door of the house. However, landscapers chalk out these paths in such a way that they highlight the most beautiful features of a home.

Paver stones are one of the most versatile construction materials. Other than creating eye-pleasing pathways, they can also be used to create sturdy and long-lasting subways or safe pool decks. If you are planning to incorporate patio pavers in your home and are not sure about whether or not you should go ahead, read on. In this article, we share with you some reasons why you should vote in favor of paver patios.

Harsh Weather Conditions Do Not Affect Brick Pavers as Much as They Affect Cement or Asphalt Walkways

Rain and sun are capable of ruining a well-built asphalt or concrete walkway. Thus, in areas that experience harsh winters and summers, concrete or asphalt walkways do not last for very long. In these areas, paver stones do a lot better. Unlike concrete or asphalt, paver stones do not develop cracks when exposed to harsh weather elements, such as rain or sun.

They Are Also Far Easier to Maintain

Paver stones are also quite easy to maintain. Unlike asphalt or cement walkways, which require a lot of maintenance and care, paver walkways do well even with a bit of cleaning and sweeping. Walkways made from other construction materials, on the other hand, require routine power washing, which, in itself, is quite an expensive task. Thus, when it comes to maintenance, paver walkways turn out to be far more affordable than walkways made from other construction materials.

They Are Also Quite Easy to Repair

The best thing about brick pavers is that when they undergo any kind of damage, one is not required to remove the entire structure and install it again. All a brick paver expert has to do is remove the damaged paver. This is not the case with other construction materials, which require the entire setup to be removed and installed all over again.

You Get Options

Other than various shapes and sizes, one also gets the option of various colors and designs in brick pavers. Thus, if you choose to go for brick pavers, you will have ample options to choose from and you will be able to find something that will completely complement your home’s interiors.

Final Word

We hope we have been able to fully convince you to give brick pavers a chance. However, here’s a pro tip: if you are planning to use brick pavers in your home, make sure to hire the best experts to do the job. Proper installation is essential to ensure long life. Therefore, do proper research, ask for recommendations, interview landscapers, and do not hire someone until and unless you are fully satisfied.

Here’s Why Brick Pavers Are a Better Choice for Driveways than Concrete

December 23, 2021 by PMS Brick Pavers – We’re the Guys

Until a few years ago, most people opted for concrete to build their driveway. However, over the recent past, the demand for concrete has deteriorated and this is primarily because the demand for brick pavers has picked up. Brick pavers are sturdier, more affordable as well as also easier to maintain, and these are just some of the reasons why homeowners are voting in favour of brick pavers. In this article, we share some reasons why more and more homeowners are opting for brick pavers over concrete for their driveways.

Maintaining a Paver Driveway Is Easier than Maintaining a Concrete Driveway

One of the reasons why homeowners have started choosing concrete over brick paver is that concrete tends to stain quite a lot and stain badly. Whether it is oil spills or normal dirt marks, concrete picks stains quite easily and it gets quite difficult to get rid of these stains. Brick pavers, on the other hand, not only do not stain easily but it is also quite easier to get rid of stains from brick pavers than concrete. All you have to do is do regular brooming and washing, and your paver driveway will keep looking new.

Repairing a Paver Driveway Is Easier than Repairing a Concrete Driveway

Concrete also tends to chip and crack. The problem here is not that these cracks cannot be fixed but that one must remove the entire concrete structure and install it again to repair small fixes. Brick pavers, on the other hand, are not only sturdier but even when they develop cracks, one is required to remove only the damaged paver — this makes repairing a brick paver driveway quite easy.

Brick Paver Driveways Are Safer than Concrete Driveways

Experts recommend brick paver over concrete because concrete is slippery to walk on. Thus, homes with children and seniors should have bricks and not concrete. Brick paver’s textured and abrasive surface makes it naturally slip-resistant. Thus, homeowners who live in areas where it rains a lot must mandatorily opt for brick pavers over concrete.

Brick Pavers Are Environmentally-Safe

Those who care about the environment must choose brick pavers over concrete as brick pavers are far more environment-friendly than concrete. Brick pavers can use recycled material. Further, if you ever decide to get rid of your brick paver driveway, you can use the bricks from the driveway in other parts of your home. Thus, reusability is an important consideration here.

Brick Pavers Are More Flexible than Concrete

Lastly, concrete tends to move and shift a lot. Thus, concrete is not considered the safest option for driveways. Brick, on the other hand, becomes closely interlinked with the ground and therefore, adapts to the ground’s foundation. Thus, brick is considered far more flexible than concrete and therefore, must be preferred over concrete for driveways.

Summing up, brick pavers have several advantages over concrete driveways. Brick pavers are not only sturdier and more affordable but are also skid-resistant and crack-resistant. Further, maintaining them and keeping them clean requires one to simply indulge in regular cleaning, brooming, and washing. All in all, brick paver driveways are in many ways a better choice than concrete driveways.

Tips on How to Increase the Life of Your Paver Patio

December 16, 2021 by PMS Brick Pavers – We’re the Guys

Over the recent past, the demand for paver patios has increased drastically and this is because paver stones are durable, versatile, and beautiful to look at — they accentuate the beauty of any space where they are added. However, since paver stones are quite durable, people assume that they do not need any kind of maintenance — like any other construction material, paver stones, too, need regular upkeep. We have compiled a list of tips that homeowners can use to their advantage in keeping their paver stones well maintained.

Always Use a Sealant

If you have paver stones in any part of your home, know that you will need a sealant. A sealant will not only protect the paver stone from stains and weeds but will also safeguard it against the damaging effect of extreme weather conditions. However, sealant cannot be applied at any time one wants.

For instance, one must not apply a sealant immediately after paver patio installation — homeowners are advised to wait at least two months after paver patio installation to apply a sealant. However, since most of us stay in areas that experience harsh winters, sometimes it becomes impossible to wait two months. In such a scenario, homeowners can choose to apply a sealant two to three weeks after the installation process.

Make Sure You Are Resealing Your Paver Patio Once Every Two Years

Sealing your paver stones once is not enough. If you have a paver patio, you must remember two things. First, make sure your paver patio is installed properly — any mistake during installation can lead to major issues in the long term. Second, make sure you are resealing your paver patio every two years.

While most homeowners think they can reseal their paver patio on their own, it is a task that should best be left to experts as most homeowners do not know anything about the kind of sealant to be picked up for the task or even how to get rid of old sealant. In other words, if you are not sure about how to reseal your paver patio, hire an expert and leave the task to them.

Rely on Experts to Make Fixes

Most homeowners invest in paver patios because they are sturdy as well as easy to fix — if there is a problem, one need not remove the entire structure. Instead, they can simply remove the damaged paver and replace it. While that sounds simple, it is a task not so simple that homeowners can take up on their own. Any mistake made during the installation process will lead to more money spent in the long run. Thus, homeowners who have a paver patio must resist the urge to make small fixes in their paver patio and instead rely only on experts to do the job.

Summing Up

Over the last few years, the popularity of paver patios has increased manifold, and that’s primarily because paver patios are sturdy, cheap, and easy to maintain. However, if you want your paver patio to last long, we recommend that you hire an expert and let them do the job. Proper installation is crucial if you wish to maintain your paver patios and give them a long life.

Things to Keep in Mind While Planning an Outdoor Kitchen

December 8, 2021 by PMS Brick Pavers – We’re the Guys

Over the recent past, outdoor kitchens have become quite popular — more and more homeowners are opening to the idea of installing an outdoor kitchen. Outdoor kitchens are useful and come especially handy when you are entertaining guests. That apart, they also certainly add to the aesthetic appeal of a home. Therefore, homeowners see an outdoor kitchen as more of an investment that will fetch returns in the long run than a necessity. So, whether you are planning to add an outdoor kitchen because you think you genuinely need it or are simply thinking of adding it because it will enhance your home’s resale value, we suggest you go through this guide that we have created especially for you. Here are a few things you must keep in mind if you are planning to get an outdoor kitchen.

Things to Keep in Mind While Planning an Outdoor Kitchen

Stick to Your Budget

When it comes to planning an outdoor kitchen, most homeowners do not even create a budget and those who create one, inevitably exceed it. So, here’s the first thing you must know and keep in mind while planning an outdoor kitchen: first, get the things you will necessarily need in your outdoor kitchen and then splurge on decoration and exteriors. Let’s understand this with an example — if you are installing an outdoor kitchen because you love barbecue parties, the first thing you must do is buy a grill, a burner, and a good couch or a few sitting chairs as these are the things you will necessarily need for your barbecue party. If you are left with money in your budget, you can accessorize the kitchen and make it look good too.

Seek the Help of an Expert in Choosing the Right Foundation

The next thing you must do is sit down with an expert and decide the type of foundation that will work well for your outdoor kitchen. In general, experts suggest using textured concrete or paving stone patios for outdoor kitchens as both are study and easy to clean and maintain. However, only an expert will be able to tell you what foundation will work well for you.

Accessorize Well

Once you are done deciding the material for your foundation, you will need the help of an interior expert to plan your outdoor kitchen. It is true that most homeowners add outdoor kitchens because they are useful. However, homeowners planning to add an outdoor kitchen must design and install it in such a way that it adds to the beauty of their home. For example, if you have done your entire house in a rustic fashion, a paver patio kitchen will complement your indoors. On the other hand, a contemporary outdoor kitchen will not only look odd but also take away from the beauty of the kitchen. Similarly, choosing the right accessories is more important than you think. Good furniture and a few throw pillows will instantly amplify the beauty of the area. Similarly, adding a few plants or a water body will most certainly make your outdoor kitchen stand out.

Summing Up

A well-planned outdoor kitchen will not only allow you to entertain your guests in a better way, especially during the summer season, but it will also make your home look more beautiful. So, if you are planning an outdoor kitchen, go ahead, just keep the points discussed in this article in mind.

Here’s What You Need to Know About Retaining Walls

December 2, 2021 by PMS Brick Pavers – We’re the Guys

If your home is situated on a sloping surface, chances are that a considerable part of your home, i.e. slopy surface must be currently serving no purpose. However, with a retaining wall, homeowners can convert their unusable slopy area into a useful zone. In this article, we tell you how. So, read on.

So, What Is a Retaining Wall?

A retaining wall is a vertical structure made of stone, concrete, or wood that is commonly used to convert unlevelled areas into leveled ones. Retaining walls serve a very important purpose: they hold soil in place and therefore, stop soil erosion.

Homeowners must know that retaining walls are quite durable. However, their durability and therefore, life depends on the material used for their construction. Similarly, homeowners must also know that retaining walls can both be straight and curved. Further, other than preventing soil erosion, they serve other important purposes, such as creating a private area where your guests can enjoy without worrying about their privacy getting intruded or creating a unique seating zone.

Different Types of Retaining Walls

Retaining walls are of four different types: Anchored, Pilling, Gravity, and Cantilever. All four types have their advantages and disadvantages.

Anchored retaining walls use tension supports to attach themselves to the rock or soil over which they are built. This tension support makes anchored walls quite sturdy and therefore, anchored retaining walls are often used in conjunction with other walls and serve the purpose of providing support to these walls.

Gravity walls are essentially used to hold soil in place in areas where the slope is no higher than three feet. Piling walls, on the other hand, use poles to get support and maintain their stability. Lastly, cantilever walls use a slab as the base. This slab is placed inside the ground and ensures the wall’s stability.

Here’s What Else You Need to Know

If you are planning to get a retaining wall installed at your place, here are a few things you must know.

  • Before hiring a contractor to start working on a retaining wall, you must sit down with an expert and understand the quality of soil and drainage in your area. This will allow you to understand which retaining wall type would be the right choice for you.
  • If your property or home lies on a steep slope, know that the runoff will be quite harsh and extreme, and in such a case a retaining wall will come especially handy during the rainy season when it will serve the key purpose of controlling the flow of the rainwater as well as guiding the flow towards the drainage.
  • If you care about the climate, here’s a suggestion: you can create your retaining wall in such a way that it directs rainwater towards plant beds and the dry spots in your garden.

If you stay in a sloppy area and soil erosion is a major issue, consider installing a retaining wall. A retaining wall, other than adding a certain charm to your yard, will also make sure that your home’s foundation stays as strong as it should be.

4 Tips to Make your Patio Last a Long Time

November 30, 2021 by PMS Brick Pavers – We’re the Guys

Paving stones look amazing when they are new, but over time they can start to look old. There’s not that much maintenance you need to do to paving stones, but there are some simple tips you can do to make paved patios last longer. Paving stones are well known for their durability, this guide will look at 4 amazingly simple tips you can use to extend the life of your patio.

1. Sealing your Patio

If you have a paver patio at your home then you will need to properly protect it. Make sure the patio is properly sealed. A good sealant provides many benefits to your paving stones. They will prevent any weeds from growing, and will also prevent the pavers from becoming stained. Sealants will also protect your patio from the effects of extreme heat and cold.

For the sealant to work, it needs to be applied around 2 months after installing the paving stones. A couple of months is ideally required since it will let the stones settle into their position. If winter is just around the corner then you can probably get away with waiting 2 weeks after installation to seal the stones.

2. Resealing your Patio

Sealing your patio will protect it, but over time the level of protection will fall. Every couple of years you will need to do a bit of maintenance. First, check that all the stones are still level and that none have sunk. If you have any damaged paving stones then these should be replaced at this stage. Once you are happy the old sealant will need to be removed. it can be difficult to know how to do this. You will first need to find out which type of sealant was used. After the old sealant is removed new sealant should then be applied.

This can be quite a bit of work, so it might be better to talk to a professional to help strip and reseal your patio. As long as the patio is sealed properly, the only thing you need to do is wash and sweep the patio to keep it looking its best.

3. Repair work

Repairing brick pavers can look like quite a simple thing to do, but it’s actually quite complicated. Removing the broken and damaged paving stones without causing damage to the others is quite difficult. As a result, it isn’t a job that most homeowners should attempt to do on their own. A paving contractor will normally be able to offer a great price to replace a few damaged stones since they can complete the project easily. When hiring patio repair contractors make sure you do your homework and choose a reputable and reliable business.

4. It’s all About the Installation

For a patio to last as long as it possibly can, it needs to be installed correctly in the first place. Patios are quite a major building project, and not really something you should attempt yourself. By getting a patio installed professionally you can be sure that it will last for many years to come.

Tips on Maintaining Paver Patios

November 22, 2021 by PMS Brick Pavers – We’re the Guys

Just like all the other things we have in our home, we must do a number of things in order to properly maintain our paver patios. After all, these things would not maintain themselves. Here are a few tips regarding the maintenance of paver patios:

Reseal Paver Stones Every Two Years

Most homeowners don’t really recognize the importance of resealing the paver stones every two years. Surely, this is something you would think that you can do yourself after seeing it done in instructional videos. The truth is it would be a lot better to let experts do this so that you can be sure that it is done in the right manner. They would even give you advice regarding the right time to reseal the paver stones.

Hire Professionals for Repair

Whenever you need to get the paver patios repaired, you must hire the right professionals for the job. After all, these professionals have been doing this for quite a long time so you can’t go wrong when you hire them. This is not the right time for you to think that you can handle this yourself. This is not the job for people with no experience. You will eventually make a few mistakes that will cost you a lot of money in the future. In order to arrive with the right professionals, you can read reviews online as a lot of people spend time making these reviews. You can also ask for recommendations from your friends so that you would be able to arrive with the right contractors. Don’t forget to check out the projects they did in the past. When you are truly confident of their capabilities, then you should sign a contract that would benefit both parties. Don’t forget to read everything stated on the contract.

Choose the Right Time to Apply Sealants

It is pretty common to think that sealants must be applied to the paver patios right after the installation process. The truth is that is not usually the case when the weather is a bit fine. It is usually highly recommended for sealants to be applied. It is no surprise that summer and spring are the usual seasons for sealants to get applied to your paver patios. However, when snow storms are about to arrive, you know you must do something about it right away. You will certainly feel safer when you apply the sealants at the right time.

It is evident paver patios are a popular choice because of how great it looks and how easy it is to maintain them. We all know how the installation is pretty important so that it won’t come off when strong weather conditions arrive at the place. Hence, better to let renowned professionals do the installation and not amateurs so that you can rest easy knowing the paver patios would last a while. If you spent a lot of money on it then you would want to get your money’s worth one way or the other.

How to Plan an Outdoor Fireplace

November 21, 2021 by PMS Brick Pavers – We’re the Guys

Your garden should be one of the most important parts of your house, but it’s probably one of the most underused. One way of getting more use out of the outdoor space is to install an outdoor fireplace. A beautiful garden will increase the value of your home and make it much more enjoyable to live there.

An outdoor fireplace is a perfect addition to any garden. This will help you to get a bit more use out of your outdoor space when the weather starts to get colder. As well as being practical, a garden fireplace can add interest to your garden and should become a real focal point.

Throughout this post, we’re going to look at the things you need to think about when you are considering installing a fireplace in your garden.

What do you Want a Fireplace for?

The first thing you need to think about is the reason you want an outdoor fireplace. Do you just want it to look nice, or do you want it to provide heat? You will also need to think about the size of the fireplace depending on how much space you have available.

If you are planning a lot of big parties outdoors, then you will need to look at larger fireplaces. But if you are planing more intimate outdoor gatherings then you might be better off with a small or medium-sized fireplace. Choose a fireplace that fits in your garden and doesn’t look out of place.

Fuel Type

The two main types of fireplaces for gardens are gas and wood-burning fires. Both of these have different benefits. Gas is probably the most popular fuel for an outdoor fireplace. This is because they are clean and very easy to use. You can easily have them installed without having to apply for any permits. There’s also no ash to empty, and they can be lit at the push of a button.

The only thing about gas is that it doesn’t have the same feel as wood-burning fireplaces. Wood fireplaces crackle and glow to create a beautiful ambiance.

Think carefully about the type of fuel you want to use. This will come down to whether you want the convenience of instant heat from gas or the more classic feel from wood fires.

Looking Great

You should carefully consider the look of the fireplace you are installing in your garden. You want it to compliment your house, not look out of place. Take a look online at the many different styles of outdoor fireplaces you can have. Print off a few pictures and give yourself plenty of time to think about which design you want to go with.

What’s the Focal Point of Your Garden?

Before deciding on the fireplace, think about your garden as it is at the moment. You probably have several different focal points already, a pond, plant pots, trees, or water features. You can also use an attractive outdoor fireplace as a focal point if you put it in a prominent position. It’s important that you don’t just choose style over functionality though.
