5 Ways to Deter Deer From Eating Your Plants and Shurbs

January 18, 2023 by PMS Brick Pavers – We’re the Guys

Deer are a common sight in suburban and rural areas, and while they can look beautiful, they can also wreak havoc on your garden. Deer are known to munch on plants and shrubs, leaving behind bare, brown stalks. Fortunately, there are a few steps you can take to deter deer from eating your plants and shrubs.

1. Install Fencing One of the best ways to keep deer out of your garden is to install a fence. Fencing should be at least 8 feet high and made of materials that deer cannot easily jump over, such as wire mesh or high–tensile electric fencing. You can also opt for decorative fencing, such as lattice, to keep deer from entering your garden.

2. Use Repellents If fencing isn‘t an option, you can use repellents to deter deer from eating your plants and shrubs. Commercial repellents are available in liquid, granular, and spray form. These repellents typically contain ingredients such as rotten eggs, garlic, or predator urine. Repellents can be applied directly to the plants and should be reapplied after it rains.

3. Plant Deer–Resistant Species Another way to deter deer from eating your plants and shrubs is to plant species that they don‘t typically like. These include plants such as yarrow, boxwood, and lamb‘s ear. You can also plant species that have strong scents, such as lavender or catmint, as deer tend to avoid these.

4. Hang Soap and Scented Sachets Hanging soap and scented sachets around your garden can also help deter deer. The smell of soap is said to be off–putting to deer, and scented sachets can also help mask the smell of your plants.

5. Use Motion–Activated Devices Motion–activated devices can also be used to deter deer from eating your plants and shrubs. These devices make loud noises or spray water when they detect movement, which can scare deer away from your garden. Taking these steps can help keep deer away from your plants and shrubs. While it may take some trial and error to determine the best way to protect your garden, these methods can help deter deer from eating your plants and shrubs.

Lighting – The Finishing Touch on your Landscape!

November 2, 2019 by PMS Brick Pavers – We’re the Guys

Once your commercial or residential landscaping is completed, there is one other aspect that should not go unattended. Now that your commercial property or residential yard, or outdoor living space is as beautiful as you envisioned it when it was first designed, it’s important that it’s visible for as long as possible. Furthermore, the particular focal points and highlights that you, your landscape designer and landscaping service worked so diligently to create deserve the respective amount of attention.

After all, why deny your elegant landscaping visuals to only being seen during the daytime? In fact, your landscape, and especially your focal points as mentioned above, can cast an even more aesthetically pleasing image at night than during the day – with the right lighting, of course.

How do you give your landscaping the best lighting for the greatest effects?

Working closely with an accomplished landscape designer, begin by creating a plan that incorporates the elements that architecturally distinguish and define your home’s exterior and existing landscaping. You’ll want to involve both shadows and direct light so that your yard and property projects the right tone and mood that you envision.

This vital aspect of your landscape lighting design should be addressed by also taking y9our budget and how you use the area into consideration.

Besides the visual benefits, what are the other benefits of landscape lighting?

While the elegance and beauty of the lighting itself and when strategically installed to complement your landscaping are essentially your primary motivations, landscape lighting should also be viewed as a wise investment. This is especially true if you use products that are energy efficient and last a long time. For this benefit, it’s recommended to go with aluminum or cast bronze. Do not use anything plastic.

How do I get the style and design that I want?

To put the finishing touch on this finishing touch, you’ll need to make deliberate, informed decisions regarding the type of finishes you’ll have on your lights. You have a wide range of options and your designer will certainly advise you on these selections, but particularly noteworthy are patina and copper.

You’ll also want quality and longevity in each of the products you use. For that reason, it has been recommended to use transformers that are stainless steel as long as they’re guaranteed against defects – both electrical and mechanical – that may occur at the manufacturer level. And, don’t overlook custom options such as your lightbulbs; both LED and halogen are among the options, as are solar lights.

By incorporating low voltage lights that are friendly to the environment as well as efficient, you can create the outdoor, evening ambiance you desire without costing you a fortune in energy costs or harming the environment.

Curb Appeal…Your Buyers First Impression

We all know the saying “you only get one chance to make a first impression.” The same is true when selling a house. The front yard is usually the first view a potential buyer has when shopping for a new home. In a slower housing market this impression can be what intrigues or attracts a buyer to look at a home. Creating curb appeal can make or break the sale of a home. Many buyers have difficulty visualizing the potential of a home’s landscape. Providing a well maintained yard can create comfort for the potential buyer as they view the interior and exterior elements of a home. [Read more…]

How to Landscape Around Egress Window Wells.

Although egress window wells aren’t often pretty, they serve a purpose if you want the basement to receive natural light. Window wells sit at or below soil grade, so you must not block light from entering through the window.
