A Step-by-Step Guide to Properly Cleaning and Preparing Your Brick Pavers for Sanding and Sealing

May 7, 2023 by PMS Brick Pavers – We’re the Guys

Brick pavers are a popular choice for homeowners in Southeast Michigan due to their durability, visual appeal, and versatility. However, regular maintenance, including proper cleaning, sanding, and sealing, is essential to maintain their pristine appearance and structural integrity. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll walk you through cleaning and preparing your brick pavers for sanding and sealing to ensure a beautiful and long-lasting result.

Step 1: Assess the Condition of Your Brick Pavers

Before starting the cleaning process:

  1. Take the time to inspect your brick pavers closely.
  2. Look for signs of damage, such as chipping, cracking, or dislodged pavers.
  3. If you notice any issues, repair or replace damaged pavers before moving forward.

Step 2: Remove Debris and Loose Dirt

Begin by clearing any debris from your brick pavers’ surface. This may include leaves, twigs, and other organic material. A broom, leaf blower, or power washer can remove loose dirt and debris. Be sure to clean between the pavers, as dirt and debris can accumulate in the joints, making it difficult for the sand and sealant to adhere properly.

Step 3: Clean Stains and Mold

Stains and mold can detract from the appearance of your brick pavers and may even cause damage over time. Use warm water and mild detergent to clean any stains, such as oil or grease. For mold and mildew, a mixture of one part bleach and ten parts water can be applied with a scrub brush or sponge. Be sure to rinse the area thoroughly after cleaning to remove any residue.

Step 4: Address Weeds and Moss

Weeds and moss can grow between the joints of your brick pavers, causing unsightly gaps and potential structural issues. Use a weeding tool or a targeted weed killer to remove weeds. For moss, a solution of one part bleach and ten parts water can be applied, followed by thorough rinsing. Allow the area to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 5: Repair or Replace Damaged Joint Sand

Over time, the sand between your brick pavers may become dislodged or eroded, leading to instability and potential damage. Inspect the joint sand, and if necessary, replace or repair it. Remove any loose or damaged sand with a broom or vacuum, then refill the joints with new polymeric sand. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper installation and curing times.

Step 6: Allow the Area to Dry

Before proceeding with sanding and sealing, it’s essential to ensure your brick pavers are completely dry. This will help the sealant adhere properly and provide a more even finish. Depending on the weather conditions in Southeast Michigan, this may take anywhere from 24 to 48 hours. Therefore, it’s best to plan your project around a stretch of sunny, dry weather to avoid any complications.

Step 7: Sand the Brick Pavers (Optional)

If your brick pavers are heavily stained or show signs of wear, sanding may be necessary to restore their original appearance. Using a belt sander or an orbital sander with fine-grit sandpaper, lightly sand the surface of your brick pavers. Be careful not to remove too much material.

Step 8: Thoroughly Clean the Surface Before Sealing

After sanding, it’s crucial to remove any dust or debris from the surface of your brick pavers. Use a broom, leaf blower, or power washer to eliminate any remaining dust. You may also want to use a vacuum to remove all particles, as they can interfere with the sealant’s adherence.

Step 9: Choose the Right Sealant for Your Brick Pavers

Selecting the appropriate sealant for your brick pavers is essential for achieving optimal results. Several sealant types are available, including water-based, solvent-based, and acrylic. Consider factors such as your climate, the age and condition of your pavers, and your desired finish (matte, semi-gloss, or high-gloss) when deciding. If you need help determining which sealant is best for your project, consult a local expert in Southeast Michigan or visit a reputable home improvement store for guidance.

Step 10: Apply the Sealant

Before applying the sealant, carefully read the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure proper application and optimal results. Generally, you’ll want to use a roller, brush, or low-pressure sprayer to apply the sealant evenly across your brick pavers’ surface. Cover the entire area, including the joints, for maximum protection and longevity. Apply the sealant in thin, even coats, allowing each coat to dry as the manufacturer recommends before applying additional coats if necessary.

Step 11: Allow the Sealant to Cure

Once you’ve applied the sealant to your brick pavers, allowing it to cure correctly is essential. This will ensure maximum durability and protection for your pavers. The curing time may vary depending on the type of sealant used and the weather conditions in Southeast Michigan. Typically, it takes between 24 and 72 hours for a sealant to cure fully. Avoid walking or driving on the pavers during this time to prevent damage.

Step 12: Maintain Your Brick Pavers

With your brick pavers adequately cleaned, sanded, and sealed, it’s essential to keep up with regular maintenance to ensure their lasting beauty and functionality. Sweep or blow away debris regularly, and clean stains promptly to prevent damage. Depending on your specific situation and the type of sealant used, you may need to reseal your brick pavers every few years to maintain their appearance and protection.

Conclusion:

Cleaning and preparing your brick pavers for sanding and sealing is crucial in maintaining their beauty and integrity. By following this comprehensive, step-by-step guide, you can enhance the curb appeal of your Southeast Michigan home and ensure your brick pavers remain in excellent condition for years to come. Why it’s important to seal and sand your brick paver patio

January 25, 2023 by PMS Brick Pavers – We’re the Guys

A brick paver patio in your outdoor living space is one of the best ways to add value and beauty to your home. But if you want your patio to remain in good condition for years to come, you need to make sure it is properly sealed and sanded. Sealing and sanding your brick paver patio is an essential part of preserving its beauty, protecting it from the elements, and ensuring a safe and stable surface.

The first step in protecting and preserving your brick paver patio is to seal the pavers. Sealing your brick pavers will protect them from stains caused by dirt, oil, and other liquids. It also helps to reduce the amount of water that can penetrate the pavers, preventing them from shifting and cracking. Sealing your brick pavers also helps to keep weeds and grass from growing in between the pavers, which can cause them to become uneven and unstable.

The next step in protecting your brick paver patio is to sand the pavers. Sanding your brick pavers helps to fill in any uneven or rough surfaces, creating a smoother and more stable surface. Sanding also helps to reduce the effects of weathering on the pavers, making them more resistant to fading, cracking, and other forms of damage.

Once you have sealed and sanded your brick paver patio, it is important to maintain it on a regular basis. This includes cleaning the pavers regularly and applying a sealer every two to three years. Regularly cleaning your brick pavers will help to keep them looking their best and protect them from staining and other damage. Applying a sealer every few years will help to keep the pavers protected from the elements, preventing them from fading, cracking, and shifting.

Overall, sealing and sanding your brick paver patio is essential to preserving its beauty and protecting it from the elements. Sealing the pavers will help to protect them from stains and other damage, while sanding will help to create a smoother and more stable surface. Regularly cleaning and sealing your brick pavers will help to keep them looking their best and protect them from fading, cracking, and shifting. By sealing and sanding your brick paver patio properly, you can ensure that it will remain in good condition for years to come.

Ways to Protect Pavers in the Winter

November 28, 2020 by PMS Brick Pavers – We’re the Guys

As we enter winter, many American cities will start receiving heavy snowfall. Unfortunately, this weather can be quite unforgiving to pavers. It can degrade the paver materials, reducing their lifespan. But, there are things you can do in the next few months to protect your pavers.

Well, here are some of the ways to protect pavers in the winter months.

  1. Never apply rock salt to pavers

A deicing agent like rock salt (sodium chloride) is safe to use only on asphalt. Property owners should avoid using it on other surfaces, including pavers. It may damage the material. Besides that, having a high salt content in the soil can also cause harm to most of the surrounding plants and grass.

What should you use instead? Try out sand after cleaning your paver driveway. It’s a cheaper alternative, which also provides pavers with an excellent level of traction. And, of course, it is environmentally friendly.

  1. Protect pavers with a sealant

Sealers offer an added layer of protection that can resist the effects of harsh weather conditions, helping homeowners to avoid the costly winter damage repairs for several years. Without a sealant, pavers become susceptible to shifting. It is because water on the surface can seep through cracks, causing the material to expand and contract.

Sealers can provide the needed protection for about five years. So you will need to replace them. Sealing is cost-effective in the long run. You are likely to incur a fraction of the repair costs.

  1. Pay attention to paver design and quality

Paver driveways subjected to an excessive amount of snowfall deserve a little more attention to prevent costly repairs. Such areas need to be designed to withstand heavy objects like snowplows.

Frequent plowing can be quite damaging to a low-quality paver material, as it can cause cracks and scratches that may ruin the aesthetic appeal. Pavers with aggressive textures are more prone to damage. So, it is a good idea to avoid them.

  1. Use a composite decking material

Composite decking materials for outdoor deck applications can stand up pretty well to harsh winter conditions. The materials can protect your pavers and deck surfaces for several years. However, it is recommended to seal them to avoid damage that might be caused by surface runoff.

  1. Choose paver color with fast ice-melting speed

Many property owners don’t know that color can affect the rate at which snow clears from the paver surfaces. A darker color will absorb more heat, thus speeding up the melting of snow. With a reduced toll on the pavers, the degradation process also slows. Therefore, color is worth your consideration.

Final Word

Invest in high-quality paver materials with high pounds per square inch (PSI), even though the upfront costs may be a bit high. Materials with high PSI are generally considered strong enough to endure the winter conditions. Even the deicing agents will likely have minimal effects on such pavers.

By following the above preventative tips, your pavers may offer a long service life with few repairs. You will certainly save a significant amount of money in the long run.
